So I’ve been trying to figure out how to simplify hair, only to discover that it is in fact very simple. You just have to think logically.
The first step is to draw a skull like the ones we’ve been working on. Then you’ve got to think of the head as having sparse hairs coming off of it. Draw them curving out from the scalp, flowing like water.
The second (and final!) step is give that hair volume. The arrows can turn into locks of hair and often the points can be the point of a stray lock. The main thing is to make sure that the hair is bigger than the skull and also has a good silhouette shape and a flowing quality.
Then just give ‘em character!
